Environmental Sustainability is the Responsibility of Us All
The whole world of politics, big-business, finance, investments, commerce and governance is talking about Environment and Social Governance (ESG) as an ever-increasing expectation. But its not only these big players that need to do their bit.
We all have to play our part too!
Here are 14 things we can all try our best to do in our own small ways to help protect ourselves and our planet.
1. Save energy: By using less energy, you can help to reduce carbon emissions. Switch off standby appliances, turn heating off or down and hang clothes to dry not a tumble drier.
2. Eat less meat: Meat production is a huge factor on climate change and the pollution of landscapes and waterways. So eat less meats, make it a monthly special treat.
3. Use reusables: Single-use products, especially plastics, end up in landfill and our oceans, hurting wildlife and the environment. Look for reusable and eco-friendly symbols.
4. Go paperless: No paper bank statements, newspapers, letters, receipts and others.
5. Use renewable energy: Renewable energy sources, hybrid or electric vehicles to reduce your carbon emissions.
6. Re-use and recycle: Re-use items again and again until worn out and then put them in the correct recycle bins.
7. Grow your own produce if you can: Go natural organic, no pesticides - they pollute the soil, water and air.
8. Donate unused or unwanted items to charities: You’ll make someone happy and reduce your waste.
9. Conserve water inside and outside your home: Use rain water butts and use all grey water to avoid wasting drinking water.
10. Buy fair trade products: Using Fairtrade marked products supports companies committed to sustainable production.
11. Leave the car at home: Walk or ride a bike more – it’s better for the environment and your health. If unable then try to use public transport more because that means less overall carbon emissions.
12. Don't waste food: Don’t throw edible leftovers away. Eat them the next day, freeze them or compost them for your garden.
13. Wear sustainable clothing: The fashion industry pollutes our world - buy more clothes from charity shops and/or seek out sustainable clothing brands.
14. Use eco-friendly cleaning products: Buy eco-friendly cleaning products and stop harming our Earth.
