NELSIP discusses ‘Transferable Skills’ – What are they and how do I get them?

Over the past few months, the North East Local Skills Improvement Plan, (NELSIP), have been discussing the conditions affecting recruitment and retention of the skilled workforce. In a recent meet we heard from a cross section of representatives from industry; power generation to niche engineering. A common theme was the need to recruit from other sectors and hence the enormous value of ‘Transferrable Skills’.

So, what are these ‘Transferrable Skills’?

Transferable Skills are skills and abilities that can be applied across different industries, job roles, and situations. They are the skills that can be transferred from one job to another, regardless of the specific requirements of the job. Some of the most important transferable skills in the industry include:

  • Communication skills - This includes written and oral communication, active listening, and interpersonal skills
  • Solutions/Improvement skills - The ability to identify problems & opportunities, analyse data, and develop improvement solutions
  • Leadership skills - The ability to motivate and inspire others, delegate tasks, and manage people
  • Project management skills - The ability to plan, organize, and manage projects effectively
  • Time management skills - The ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and manage time effectively
  • Analytical skills - The ability to analyse data and make informed decisions based on that data

There is one qualification where all the above skills are gathered into the single syllabus:

A Management Systems Lead Auditor.

In this Chartered Quality Institute ( www.quality.org ) registered training course, students are taught to:

·      Prepare for an Audit (research the client, assemble an audit team of complementary strengths, plan the audit schedule & communicate with both client and team)

·      Conduct the Audit (lead the audit team, manage often difficult meetings & interviews, gather data and investigate where required)

·      Report the Audit (analyse your findings, deliver good or bad news in the confident, non-confrontational manner and support judgements with evidence)

It doesn’t matter whether you qualify as a Quality, Environment or any other discipline – the skills you will learn are critical to any industry you choose and therefore your employability will increase across the industrial sectors.

Most valuable to commercial, institutional and industrial sectors alike is the skillset to look for a better way coupled with the tools and techniques to identify opportunity and drive improvement.

iqms Learnings’ Lead Auditor courses are written to meet industry recognised syllabi – CQI and IRCA, IEMA, BRCGS, and are available in numerous standards.

Our tutors are from industry, not academia, and so understand the industrial landscape. Imparting their experiences, they will bring alive a skillset that no organisation can afford not to have – the ability to investigate and interrogate processes, looking for the better way and uncovering opportunity.
