Do I need ISO Certification?
You’ve spent years building your business up from an idea to providing a secure career for you and some trusted employees – what’s the next step in its development?
Many owner operators of small businesses ask themselves this question.
Often what has made the business successful is the founders’ determination and attention to product and customers needs so that focus should surely be maintained. The answer is both yes, and no.
Continued focus on what made you successful is clearly important but at some stage ensuring that things can function without your intervention is critical to continued growth.
Very soon after you started your business, maybe even before, you will have created processes and procedures to turn the wheels of the business. The time spent on these processes is well invested because now is the time to seek external Certification.
With Certification, for example in ISO 9001, your organisation will demonstrate to competitors and customers that you have the competence and confidence that your products or services compare with the best.
ISO Certification will bring opportunity to your door. The opportunity to - ‘do what you do’ - but better, and ultimately the opportunity to play in the big league.
So, specifically, what will Certification offer my organisation?
Credibility, Market Access, Operational Improvements, Compliance and Risk Management, Competitive Advantage, Improved Employee Morale to name a few benefits.
But it’s the Operational Improvements that I want to highlight.
Operational Improvements always lead to a financial benefit so it’s in everyone’s interest to make it happen and with an ISO Certified management system organisations give themselves the very best chance of identifying and improving processes within the business through their Internal Auditors – the Superhero’s of Improvement!
What can I get Certified in?
There are several ISO standards that apply to most sectors, for example whether you are a call centre or a plastics manufacturer you’ll be equally interested in the quality of your product or service.
ISO 9001 (Quality Management): Demonstrates quality-focused processes
ISO 14001 (Environmental Management): Focuses on environmental responsibility
ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety): Improves workplace safety
ISO 27001 (Information Security): Essential for businesses managing sensitive data
However, some sectors have Quality standards specific to their industry, still based on the principles used in ISO 9001. Examples of these are;
· ISO 22000 or BRCGS or FSSC (Food Safety): Used in the F&B industry and its supply chain.
So, the benefits are plentiful and there are numerous options of standards to become Certified to – but should you?
Here are some of the considerations
- Industry Requirements: Some sectors often mandate ISO certification.
- Cost and Time: Certification requires resources for training, audits, and maintaining compliance.
- Size of Your Business: Smaller businesses may find it challenging but external support is always available.
- Long-Term Goals: If growth, global expansion, or entering regulated markets is part of your strategy, ISO certification might be valuable.
And what’s the Alternative?
If a full certification isn’t feasible or necessary, you could still implement ISO-aligned processes without pursuing formal certification. This can deliver many of the same operational benefits at a lower cost but without the recognition of the Certificate.
Perhaps one of the key considerations should be ‘will my customers and prospects value it?’.
Final Decision – in the bluntest terms!
You should consider ISO certification if:
- Clients or markets demand it.
- You want to improve efficiency and reliability.
- Long-term benefits outweigh short-term investment.
You might not need ISO certification if:
- Your industry doesn’t prioritise it.
- The costs outweigh potential returns.
