ISO 9001 - the revision is nearly here

ISO 9001:2015 remains the only certifiable version of the standard today, and it will stay that way until the new edition is formally published. That said, the shape of ISO 9001:2026 is now largely settled. The Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) went to ballot with member bodies, and with that vote closing on 9 July 2026, publication is on track for September 2026.

Encouragingly for anyone managing a QMS, this is an evolutionary revision rather than a rewrite. The ten-clause Harmonized Structure stays intact, and the core requirements in Clauses 4-10 see only targeted changes. The headline developments are:

  • Quality culture and ethical behaviour become an explicit leadership requirement (Clause 5.1.1), with new guidance on how organisations can demonstrate this.

  • Climate change
, already introduced via the 2024 amendment, is formally folded into Clause 4.1 as a factor in determining organisational context.

  • Risks and opportunities
are separated into clearer sub-clauses within 6.1, making the distinction between managing threats and pursuing opportunities more explicit.

  • The quality policy
(Clause 5.2) must more visibly reflect organisational context and strategic direction.

  • Annex A
has been substantially expanded to aid interpretation, though this guidance is non-mandatory.

There's no need to rush, once published organisations are expected to have a three-year transition window, so certification to ISO 9001:2015 remains entirely valid in the meantime. In fact, if you're not yet certified, implementing against the current 2015 edition now is still the sensible route - the changes ahead are modest enough that the step up to 2026 will be straightforward. It's a good moment, though, to get your QMS fundamentals genuinely solid rather than just audit-ready.

Our ISO 9001 Foundation and Internal Auditor courses are a practical place to start along with our Lead Auditor course.  Our ISO 9001 courses will be updated to reflect the 2026 requirements as soon as they are released.
