Final Draft (FDIS) released in January for ISO 14001
The Final Draft of the ISO 14001 standard was released on 5th January 2026 with the revised ISO 14001:2026 standard due to be published sometime in March or April.
During the ISO revision process when revisions to a standard reach the Final draft then there are only minor editing changes which can be made before the standard is published. There is a period of 8 weeks when comments and amendments can be suggested on syntax, numbering, etc. but we now know what will be included in the new standard.
Some headlines are that;
- In Clause 4, when identifying issues explicit environmental conditions must now be considered including “pollution levels, availability of natural resources, climate change, biological diversity (i.e. biodiversity) or ecosystem health”.
- The requirement to “fulfil compliance obligations” has been updated to “meet compliance obligations” and this is referenced throughout the standard, notably within the commitment statements required by the Environmental Policy clause (5.2).
- Planning (clause 6) has been restructured to improve understanding of requirements
- What is meant by “Life cycle perspective” has been clarified when determining aspects and impacts (6.1.2).
- A new sub-clause in Planning (6.3) which requires a structured approach to EMS related change management initiatives
- The old clause 10.1 “General” has been renamed “Continual Improvement” and the content of 10.3 on continual improvement has been integrated into 10.1
Generally, there has also been some “harmonisation” and standardisation of numbering and wording which will help to align with the other ISO Management standards.
