ISO 9001:2026 – What’s Changing and How to Prepare?
Most will know the ISO 9001 standard, the global benchmark for quality management systems (QMS), is undergoing a significant revision, with the new ISO 9001:2026 version expected to be published in September 2026. This marks the first major update since ISO 9001:2015, reflecting the evolving needs of modern businesses and global challenges.
The revision aims to modernise the standard by integrating contemporary business practices and addressing emerging trends. Key anticipated changes include:
- Enhanced Risk Management - Building on the risk-based thinking introduced in 2015, the 2026 version will emphasise proactive risk identification and mitigation strategies, turning risks into opportunities for improvement.
- Digital Transformation - With the rise of AI, automation, and data analytics, ISO 9001:2026 is expected to include guidance on integrating digital tools into quality management processes, ensuring organisations remain competitive and compliant in a tech-driven world.
- Sustainability and ESG Alignment - The new standard will likely incorporate Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, encouraging organisations to demonstrate responsible business practices, reduce waste, and improve energy efficiency.
- Customer-Centric Enhancements - Strengthening the focus on customer satisfaction, the revision may introduce advanced feedback mechanisms and real-time monitoring to better understand and respond to customer needs.
- Supply Chain Resilience - In response to recent global disruptions, ISO 9001:2026 will likely include new criteria for supplier evaluation, performance monitoring, and risk management across the supply chain.
Organisations currently certified to ISO 9001:2015 will benefit from a three-year transition period following the release of the new standard. This means existing certifications will remain valid until at least 2029, allowing ample time for adaptation.
To prepare, businesses should begin by educating key personnel, conducting gap analyses, and planning system updates. Training and readiness assessments will be essential to ensure a smooth transition.
The ISO 9001:2026 revision represents a strategic opportunity for organisations to future-proof their quality management systems, enhance operational resilience, and align with global best practices. Staying informed and proactive will be key to navigating this transition successfully.
What Can You Do Now?
iqms Learning will be keeping our customers informed of the changes as they happen. The milestones ahead are as follows;
The Draft International Standard (DIS) is expected to be released between July 2025 and March 2026. This version will be circulated globally for public comment and voting. It’s the first opportunity for organisations and stakeholders to see the proposed changes in detail.
The Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) will subsequently be released. If significant changes are made during the DIS stage, an FDIS will be issued between April and June 2026 for final approval.
The final ISO 9001:2026 standard is scheduled for release in September 2026.
In anticipation of the process above, prepare internally. Begin reviewing your current QMS, identify areas likely to be impacted (e.g., risk management, sustainability, digital integration), and assign a transition lead and get in touch with us for help.
