The Value of Knowledge and Skills

A CQI (Chartered Quality Institute) and IRCA (International Register of Certificated Auditors) training includes both Skills objectives and Knowledge objectives.

Why is it so important to include both?

Let’s begin by clarifying, in a management systems context, what we mean by Knowledge and Skills.

Knowledge objectives ensure learners understand the why, such as:

• Theoretical concepts, standards, and regulations (e.g., ISO 9001, auditing principles).
• Industry best practices and compliance requirements.
• The "why" behind processes and methodologies.

Without this foundational knowledge, professionals wouldn’t know the rules, frameworks, or key principles they need to follow.

Skills objectives build on the Knowledge that is learnt. Skills learning focuses on how to apply that Knowledge in real situations.

• How to conduct audits effectively, asking the right questions, and assessing evidence.
• To problem-solve, assess risk, and make decisions in dynamic environments.
• Communication, leadership, and conflict resolution during audits or quality improvement projects.

Without skills, all that knowledge remains theoretical and isn’t useful in practice.

So, what are ideal learning objectives?

Just knowledge? You’ll understand the standards but won’t know how to use them effectively.

Just skills? You might be good at execution but lack the reasoning behind it, leading to mistakes.

Both together? You get competent, confident professionals who can think critically, make informed decisions, and apply best practices in real-world situations.

For auditors and quality professionals, this mix is especially important because their job isn’t just about knowing what’s right—it’s about ensuring things are done right through assessments, communication, and problem-solving.
